Adequan newbie -- what are your experiences?

    Hi all,

My senior lab just turned 13 last week and I've had him on Rimadyl for the last two years, taking 1/2 of a 100 mg tablet twice a day. It used to do the trick, but now my senior's mobility is troubling to the point where I've dubbed his daily business walk "The Green Mile." Today, the mobile vet came over (my darling is refusing to use the ramp to get in the car) and after some discussion, we are trying Adequan. Does anybody have any experience with Adequan? Positive or negative. I await feedback from this most knowledgable and giving forum.

    Cheers,

    Satchel's Human

I've heard lots of good things about it. Someone who used to be on the board but no longer posts uses it for her chocolate lab who had multiple ortho surgeries at a young age. She started using it right after those surgeries I believe, the dog has been on it for years and it is a wonder drug for her. My dog is seven, I know he has mild hip dysplasia and I will probably be using it for him in a couple years. I've always heard positive things about it.

I'm in Canada and used Cartrophen Vet which is quite similar and I can't say enough good things about it. With C.Vet you do a loading dose once a week for four weeks then wait to see what your booster interval will be, it differs by critter and ailment. I saw improvement after the first loading dose (injections), which is not always the case but was nice. We did switch to Adequan after a supposed (but probably not) problem with the CV and did not use the Adequan long enough to say much about it except you have to dose it more often, making it more expensive for me. C. Vet is available in the U.S. but your Vet has to go through some hoops for you.

One thing to investigate for both is doing them at home, yourself. Cheaper, less stress for pets who don't like to visit the Vet and reduced mileage costs for you. My Vet pre-loaded the syringes for me but some will let you do that too. In the U.S. you should check if the drug company still covers you for problems if you do some things yourself.

Thank you Snowshoe! My mobile vet wrote the prescription for the drug and the syringes and my neighbor (a former vet tech) will do the injections at home. It would not be possible to take the old guy to the vet so frequently to get the loading shots. If the Adequan works, depending on the interval between shots, it should be less expensive than the Rimadyl and without the concerns with liver and kidney damage. I'm optimistic.

We only used it after one of our dogs had elbow surgery.

I use it for my guy with all sorts of ortho issues. It didn't work miracles but it definitely helps. Best to use it in combination with other therapies, like chiro, massage, acupuncture or laser

I only wish it had been suggested and we started the injections for Bailey sooner. We started them when he was almost 14 yrs old for arthritis in his back, they worked wonders for my boy for a little while. He was able to wag his tail again and actually run a bit too.

Adequan has made quite a difference for our 105lb 11 year old yellow. Due to arthritic hind quarters, he got to the point that anything other than the shortest of walks was possible. He is now far more mobile and seemingly in far less pain.

Our collie was on it the last few years of her life and it helped, not miraculous but helpful.

Our 11 year old Lab Sugar went on it this past summer, to get her off Deramax. It had a fairly dramatic effect during the loading period and now she getting a shot every 3 weeks. As someone else here said, it's a significant help, but not dramatic. I like that it's not really a drug and that you can learn to give the shots at home if desired.
