Sorry for your news. How old is he?

This is how I lost Gala at 14 and and a couple months. It was dx'd in December, and did great for 7 mos until July (when she crashed) and had to be pts. Yesterday morning I had a voicemail that one of my 12yo's suddenly collapsed due to the same thing. They put her down as surgery wasn't a good option and she was already bleeding out.

In tears here....and I am so, so sorry.

    Very sad.

I am not sure what I would do...you don't want your dog to bleed out though.

    Sending prayers...

So much sadness on the board lately...terrible.

Sorry for this situation you're going through. For me with Tanner, it was most definitely the loss of appetite and weight over the last couple weeks. He had a multitude of problems but I was managing everything pretty well with therapy, harnesses and medication. I was, however, looking out for his safety, and making sure he didn't fall, have an accident or was in pain. He declined rapidly in the last few weeks, so it was obvious, but very very hard to acknowledge.

Sending good thoughts to you during this difficult time.

I don't mean to hijack this thread...but I didn't think that splenic masses were so common in Labs? I know they are common in Golden Retrievers.

Just seem to hear of them quite often now.

Goldens tend to have this issue earlier (8-9 yrs old). Fortunately (imo), Labs tend to be later. So far, 14+ and 12 have been my experience. With a life expectancy of 10-12 by Dog Fancy magazine years ago, I think they jinxed us. Even my own vet said once our dogs hit the "double digits", every day was a gift. Today I had a lab breeder tell me her girl died of hemangio at 6. That sucks.

    Jeez that's crazy.
He is 11...April he will be 12 if he were to make it that far. I cant believe I'm saying this-I dont think its going to be much longer. Today he didnt want anything but I was lucky enough to get him to eat a bit of ice cream-which had the Mirz. (sp cant remember it for the life of me) to increase his appetite. So far its on & off-he seems most hungry hours after he has the pill but even then he wont eat regular stuff like burgers or steaks, its mostly cottage cheese & rice, crackers, muffins. His weight seems to be holding steady & with the increase of a few lbs due to the pills-he looks good, not too thin. He's playing a lot and when I do my evening yoga he's on the mat with me poking me with his nose for attention.
If he was just laying there not eating then I would know it is time. But he isn't. He is living life like a Lab-minus the counter surfing of his younger days and gobbling steaks. He will still take a sandwich right out of my hand if I turn the other way-only he likely wont eat it all now.
Its amazing-all this time I thought it was going to be the rare cancer of his sinuses that would take him from me, and now it seems that is the lesser of the 2 evils.

Now-can anyone tell me what to expect for the pts ? Price? how long? and of course-mainly-is it quick? And lastly-how do I keep my grief from him so that his last moments are not of him worrying about me because he feels I'm upset?

Dakota seems a bit anxious lately too.
