    Kidney Disease OR Surgical Complications??

Looking for information and/or experiences with giving your dog Zeniquin? Specifically for an extended period of time? Our dog contracted Pseudomonas while undergoing a common ligament correction surgery and has suddenly started experiencing serious renal issues. He was also on Deramaxx, which was stopped approximately 1 week ago. He's been on Zenigun since mid November.

He is an older dog BUT had above average blood work prior to surgery. Now all of his issues are being classified as "chronic kidney disease". He started having renal failure issues the same exact day that his (pseudomonas) surgical site began to activitely drain. Just curious to know if he is could potentially be having some sort of adverse reaction to the Zeniquin or if this could even play of role in his drastic decline of his kidney function.

I would wonder if the Deramaxx is part of the problem. If you could get enough posts to send PM's, (I thunk 5 or 10), you should send a message to Patty, (snowco labs). I believe her kennel also has a website you could contact her on, Snowco Labradors. She is very knowledgeable about kidney issues. Sending good thoughts your way.

From what I know blood work won't show kidney issues in the beginning stages. All the medication may have made it worse. Sending good thoughts.

No experience with that infection or medication, but I just wanted to say I hope he starts to feel better soon. My vet told me that by the time kidney values on blood work are wonky, 75% of kidney function is already gone. That's why doing a urinalysis is usually a better method of assessing kidney function. Did your dog have a urinalysis at all prior to his surgery? If his blood work was perfect, I'm surprised they are calling this chronic, as it sounds more acute to me. Deramaxx is a NSAID and as such, can have adverse affects on the kidneys and liver. I think if this were my dog, I'd be consulting with an internal medicine specialist.

I don't know anything about the Z drug mentioned but the D can cause problems as mentioned. I went thru KF in a senior (no drugs) from old age. Here is what I did. You do need routine urinalysis including specific gravity, as well as routine blood work.

Praying you can reverse the levels or at least keep them in check.
