    The latest on Montana

Things began to look dire earlier last week as he pretty much wanted to only be in bed alone. A few great days followed by a quick downhill. 2 Am Saturday morning found us ( me & him) racing out into the cold for him to pee and it turned to blood. Thank God I had a 9 am appt. already for his weekly B12 and weigh in so they found a horrible UTI thankfully that is all it was but it was bad & made him really sick probably since his immune system is already weakened. Anyway-saw a different vet this time who came right out & said "I have to say though-it is NOT his time, he is NOT ready yet. You will see signs and we will help you. So that being said, for today I am going to give you an anti nausea pill to add to the mirtazapine and lets take it a day at a time ok?" Tears filled my eyes-I was just so happy to hear her say it wasn't time...So she gave us this along with Baytril for the infection. Today his spark is back, he is wagging and racing to the kitchen whenever anyone goes in there-his appetite stimulant is working HOWEVER....he STILL is SOOO picky. I am going to call today to see if I can increase the mirtazapine and/or the Zofran. I feel like we are SO CLOSE to getting him back on track-at least eating enough to sustain his weight rather than losing it. She did say it could only be weeks or maybe the most-months, and I know this.So day by day-and I'm hoping I can increase these meds a bit to get them to REALLY work.
    Any thoughts guys?

thanks for the support-it means a lot.

Glad to hear he has perked up. I saw in your other thread how you feel like you'd be deceiving him when his last ride to the vet comes time. I know how that feels. I hope you get many weeks or months before that day comes. Thank you to your vet for laying it out there for you.

Yes this vet is great, offering things I hadn't thought of instead of just giving me bare min.
Thanks, its great to see him improve. His tail got its swagger back.

Great update! A UTI can really reek havoc on an older system.

Prayers being sent for an increase in appetite.

Praying that Montana has many, many more days, weeks, months to share with you. Cherish each moment.

I think you're doing the right thing. As long as Montana is comfortable, eating and not in pain, I would continue doing what you're doing and adjust meds and food as needed. The end phase (however long that is) is a difficult time mixed with good days and not so good days. It sounds like you have time where you can plan ahead for how things will go, and hopefully avoid emergency situations. They always seem to happen in the middle of the night too...

    Hang in there.

Glad to hear it was just a UTI and he perked up. Sending good thoughts and gentle hugs.
