    12 yr old urinary problems

My 12+ yr old girl was never sick until a month ago. Just completed 3 wks of antibiotics for cystitis with crystals. She's been dribbling urine for a month - initially it was continuous, but now she has some mostly continent periods, but needs a diaper overnight / if I'm at work and leaks when she naps during the day. Will this resolve or is it her new normal? Vet gave us amitryptaline to slow frequency / dribbling a week ago - but it hasn't appeared to help much.

My previous dog was 12 when she started dribbling urine too. Like your girl, it was only when she was relaxed. The vet ran tests and put her on a medication that seemed to stop the problem without any apparent side effects. I'm sorry but I don't remember what it was called. Based on another thread at this forum (1 Year Old Peeing in Her Sleep), I'm going to guess it was PPA - seems to ring a bell for me while the medication you're using does not.

I had to give my dog a pill once a week (I think... it was awhile ago). The vet gave me a dosing schedule and asked me to adjust the timing based on whether Chloe dribbled or not. The idea was to give the medication at the maximum effective interval, to give as little of the medication as possible. He also told me if new dribbling incidents occurred, I'd have to decrease the time (ie. by a day) between dosages until the dribbling stopped again.

Is that what you're doing? I know if the meds hadn't worked for Chloe, I would've asked my vet for alternatives. In hindsight, I should've done that at the start.

Elavil is the people name of the med my vet gave us. I called the other day to ask about options & she said I could try giving it to her twice a day. I haven't upped the dose yet- did read that PPA is used for dogs with this problem. She needs a repeat urunalysis in a ciuple days - guessing that I want to see if the cystitis is cleared up before giving her a doubled doseof the amitryptaline.

Thanks for sharing your info -- she never had problems till four weeks ago. This is a bit overwhelming -- washing a lot of diapers / pads & cleaning the carpet quite regularly.

I was put on Elavil to ease the tension in my back after an injury. I couldn't stay on it...it gave me night terrors. Not mere nightmares but night terrors. I'd wake up screaming.

I don't know if this might be a side effect in dogs but if she starts to act weird you'll be prepared.

I believe Stilbestrol (sp?) is not as much in favour now as it was over 20 years ago but it helped our English Springer Spaniel. Her problem, we were told, was spay incontinence. She did not need diapers.

So sorry both of you are having to deal with this. I home seniors, one with fetal incontinence but did not have to deal with urinary incontinence.

If possible, maybe your vet can get a urine sample with the crystals and have them analyzed. They certainly can be a bladder irritant. Knowing what they are made up of might help adjusting diet to lessen their formation.

My daughter's dog is on Proin b.i.d. She's 9 years old and started having some leaking. It seems to be controlling it pretty well, or so they say. One of the other members on here, JaneDoe, recommended some incontinence pads that she found somewhere to use on the bed for one of her dogs. Reusable ones, not chux. I thought I'd bookmarked them but if I did, it's not easily retrievable. Poor pup. I hope things improve.

I have pads (I'm a nurse, so I knew where to buy them). She's a bit of a brat though - removes them from her beds (one in my bedroom, one in living room), and things like the sofa- for which I've gotten a six foot long washable pad.

We dealt with this the last 6 months or so of my 13 year old girl's life. We used removable diaper covers for dogs lined with incontinence pads for men from Walmart, if that helps. We found it worked much easier and better than diapers and was less expensive.

Thanks - I do have washable dog diapers. She gets out of them occasionally - i generally use them overnight / when I am at work.
