This post about two weeks ago gives the background.
I dropped Achilles off just after 8 today. Dr. Vallee called a while later to report that Chili was intubated and sedated, doing well. X-rays showed some abcesses which confirmed his strong suspicion of same. He planned to proceed with extracting those teeth since they undoubtedly were the most concerning, then move on to some other teeth which showed signs of fractures. He said that at some time in the past Achilles had a root canal done on one canine, which must have been performed before I adopted him ten plus years ago.
Dr. Vallee called several hours later. Achilles was just coming out from under. Several pre-molars in his upper jaw were extracted as were three in his lower jaw. Dr. Vallee also extracted two incisors in the lower. These were the ones he definitely wanted to get out today. Several teeth still had good attachment to the jaw so they required more care and more time. By this time poor Chili had been under for several hours and Dr. Vallee thought it best to stop there. So unfortunately Achilles has another visit to the dentist in his not too distant future.
The doc sent us home with post-op instructions - close monitoring overnight, give him a little food tonight, restart the meloxicam tomorrow - and scrips for codeine, 15mg every 8-12 hours, and clindamycin, 150mg 2x daily. We got home about ninety minutes ago. He was still a ittle groggy so I've let him rest. I gave him a bit of canned food with a crushed codeine tablet a short time ago. Just now he moved from the living room into the bedroom, which is a safe, dark, quiet place. Soon I'll try to get a little more food into him. I'm unlikely to sleep well, if at all, tonight.
Stella's most definitely out of sorts. Neither she nor Achilles were fed this morning. She's completely ignored the food I put out for her earlier, has been very gentle with Achilles, and given me some ong looks.

Stella wants to know what the heck you did to Achilles!
I'm sorry the Chili Dog has to have more dental work done. Maybe they can fit him with dentures, while they're at it. It sounds like he's losing a lot of teeth! Poor boy. I wonder if codeine makes dogs constipated like it can humans? OK Achilles, here's your doggy mush and some prune juice! Hope he recovers uneventfully.

Poor Achilles. I hope he recovers quickly for his dental, poor guy. Sweet Stella taking care of her brother knowing he needs extra care right now.

Ah, poor pups.
Very familiar with Archie having to have several extensive dental extractions. At least I knew ahead of time that it would take more than one surgery. Some tender loving care, soft food, and cuddles and you'll be surprised how fast recovery will be. The worse part, for you, is seeing those sad eyes at no breakfast time.
Sending healing thoughts and prayers.

smartrock, Stella and Achilles are probably plotting against me. Good question about codeine; constipation and be a side effect. I discussed this with the vet and we agree that this should not be a concern with his eating canned food.
labsnewfy, thank you. He is doing much better today. He was up on the daybed a while ago, a favourite perch for which he can watch the world go by.
POPTOP, thanks.
Achilles wanted to go out twice today, a good sign. One time he spent a while lounging on the dog bed on the deck. Today I have fed Chili small amounts of food frequently. Since he could reasonably be budgeted almost a can of food per feeding and canned food isn't cheap, I bought a bunch of chicken legs. I'll poach them, debone, mix with rice, some green beans, a little oil, then puree. It is not a long-term diet; more something to do for varietys' sake.

oh gosh, the poor fellow. but i bet he'll feel tons better with those rotten roots gone. How long does he wait for round 2?
Scout's breath has gotten stinky (no, nowhere near as bad as i've smelled, but noticable for him since it hasn't even smelled), he gets raw marrow bones, and he gets his teeth brushed. yes, theres a bit of tartar, but not huge, so i'm a little concerned whats going on... i'm going to up the brushing to every day for a week and see if theres any improvement, if not, a trip to the vets will be forthcoming.
So nice of Stella to be conspiring with her buddy, she must feel really bad for him!

its always hard to have a dental whether you're a dog or a human. hope he recovers soon
Mr Kleb (10-10-2016)
Scoutpout, I think he is feeling better. Took him for a short driving errand yesterday; he bounded out to the car and hopped right in. And his breath is far less stinky. Round two won't happen for a while, perhaps late next month or in December - no date scheduled yet.
I hope nothing serious is going on with Scout!
mark21, yes, going to the dentist is never a fun thing to do.

Achilles had his two week check-up. The vet is very pleased with his recovery and said that the extrachtions have healed quite well. We've gone on daily walks. Interestingly, he passes on morning walks - since he spends 20 or so minutes outside I haven't pressed the issue. The vet gave the go-ahead to slowly resume feeding kibble beginning today, two weeks post-surgery. Lamentably, more teeth need to be extracted. They can wait though; there is no hurry.
For now, we give thanks for the good boy's fine recovery.
