The things we do for training, LOL

We were practicing recalls today in class, and we do them with a loaded (food) target behind us. Depending on what we decide, the dog can either run between our legs straight to the target or come in and do a front (or 3) before being allowed to go get the food. The idea is to keep up speed since they don’t always have to front.

So the first one I do with Sass, I let her run through. The next one I told her to front. She didn’t and I wasn’t able to catch her in time to keep her from going around me to get the treat. The next one, I knew she was going to try it again (after all, she’d just been rewarded for it!) so I was ready. She was coming in at 100mph and I stepped in front of her to block her going for the treat. She slammed into my knee (she’s only 50lbs but had LOTS of velocity) and knocked me down .... but I deem it a success because she didn’t get the treat, LOL. And between the collision and seeing me fall it shocked the heck out of her so acted as a pretty good correction, too.

I’ll need ibuprofen and ice now, but it was worth it!

OUCH! i've seen some pretty serious injuries from collisions like that (but helps you knew she was coming at least) - oh Sassy!

    Hope you aren't too sore

Penny was one of those dogs that would absolutely run into you (anyone). she had zero sense of going around. sure sometimes it may be accidental but other times she HAD to know I (or my friend) were standing there and pretty sure I saw no signs of attempted breaking :P

I hope you're OK! The last time a Lab took me out at the knee, I was really injured!

Just bruised, I think. I hope it’s not one of those things that’s worse in the morning because I have a show, LOL

Yeah, why do we step in front of that little furry oncoming train when we should know from experience what's likely to occur? Hope the ice and IB do the trick!

My Sister-in-law broke her leg with a boxer. Good luck on the recovery.

    That's my girl!!!!!

There have been several times I almost got taken out when they were engaged in a good game of bitey face!!! Luckily I've been able to dodge them, my knees are bad enough without a 70 pound Lab crashing into them!!!

You mean, she didn't think you going down on the floor was an extra special reward of you playing with her and jump on you to boot?

Annette, ouch!! Take it from me, Lab training takes a toll on the knees if you continue with this, or a similar method! Labs body slam each other. They are bred, in part, for low body sensitivity.
