What is this green stuff growing in the yard?

There is a carpet of this stuff in my neighbor's yard and it's crowding out the grass. It's very dense and pulls out easily. Does anyone know what it is? The soil is so poor that I'm going to have to put down new stuff and I wonder if I should pull all of this out first.

It looks like this on the ground. I can't get enough detail on the sample without blurring. It's almost furry but it's not moss.

I can't tell from the picture either but it might be this, either way this website has a ton of great id photos for all kinds of weeds and grasses.

The word sedge sounds familiar to me. I'll definitely look through the pics.

Oh wow. It looks like it's a moss. It looks like the bottom center of this photo.

Good to know. I can get rid of that.
