Chickens are so gross. Mine are picky I guess. I gave them a somewhat fresh dead mouse once and they just stood around in a circle and looked at it.
My two older birds are in a smaller coop. It has an enclosed space that's big enough for three chickens. I like it for small groups so that they can retain heat. It also has their food dish in it so that the food won't get wet.
It was snowing the other day and it got really cold that night. I opened the door to check out the food situation and there were huge tufts of fur next to the dish.
I don't do dead things or anything along those lines so I asked my husband to come out. He lifted what was apparently a squirrel corpse out of the enclosure. They had been extremely thorough. I suspect that the thing had come in from the cold and the chickens had objected then thought that that would be a good source of protein.
Pretty gross.

Yeah. I always thought that mine would be good with worms, insects and eggs. It never occurred to me that they would go for something bigger. Maybe this is a sign though. The worms can't be out anymore so I guess they weren't getting enough.
Be scared...be very scared...
