    From PetMD

    • Panting
    • Noisy respiration and a high-pitched sound when breathing in (most common)
    • Change in character of the bark
    • Occasional coughing
    • Reduced activity, exercise intolerance
    • Elevated rectal temperature (especially during warm weather months)
    Why, what's going on?

It can eventually lead to rear end weakness too.

We have heard Jed give a few weird coughs on and off, so that's been sitting on the back on my mind as well.

And unfortunately, I don't believe there is a prevention for it.

Here's a little more info including what Jen mentions about weakness:

I haven't had a dog with it, only info is what I've read.

interesting link to hind end issues....but not sure rock's symptoms match up. I certainly don't want to be doing those tests (xray, laryngoscapy, esophagram...)

Rock developped some new issues over the last week that have me stressed. I don't want go google :P Earliest I could get an apt at my vet is Tuesday (next Tuesday) though i also e-mailed the vet some videos. "coughing" isn't really a prevalent one. He is breathing more loudly and while he sometimes did a gagging thing it lasted longer hte other ninght. Something is off in the throat I think.

From you description it could be LP, but the only way to diagnose it conclusively is to send a scope down their throat. We’re pretty sure Jolie had it, but we never had her scoped to be sure. There are management techniques you can use to minimize the problems (keep him cool, quiet, etc), but ultimately there is no cure.

We never diagnosed Hudler officially either. It was clear he had it. Since there really aren't any things you can do to prevent it from happening, and I won't do the surgery, I tried to mitigate the symptoms, I didn't need to test him.

Yes, we did have the vet look at his weird hacking, but he never did it in the vets office, so it was kinda useless.

yeah if management is the same regardless I don't want to spend 1000$+ on diagnosis. the only thing I saw would be to see if it's something like cancer or whatnot. I knew LP would just be a management thing

Urgh. 2017 sucks as bad as 2016.

he has done this more livghtly here and there eating (NOT often). eating not from a bowl. this incident lasted much longer than those. he was fine after.. hasnt done that since. but takes a deep breath in exitement before eating and seems more gulpy when n he drinks.

Fine on walks with a few minor incidents. he's always fine morning-night walks but on afternoon walks, sometimes, he'll suddenly pant heavily a few times, repeated over a few minutes. Then - fine perfect the rest of the walk. Happen around 10-15mins in. he doesn't slow down and keeps forging as he pants but I slow him-top him.

He already had hind end issues we've been managing. Nerve issues so interesting that LP is nerve related.

We figure my Hershey has this as well. He is 11 1/2 and can't chase after balls any more. His spirit is willing but his breathing closes up and changes to a whistling sound that is REALLY scary. We have gone the xrays route so no cancer. We have changed from a prong (which we don't think bothered him, but just to be sure) to a gentle leader and he goes on short walks multiple times a day.
He also has a hacking cough at times - usually after day time sleeping or mouth breathing - I figure things get dried out.
A few times when it was really cold this winter (-25C or more), he has only managed a couple of houses before he can't breathe, so it is similar to an asthma attack.
Interesting about the rear end link. He has seemed more stiff as well at times.
We are off to a specialist tomorrow so will update you on the new info or suggestions I get for management.
