    Some improvement!

Kimber's needed help getting up steps since this summer. After Thanksgiving, though, she started to balk at going down stairs. We have three steps from our front door, and sometimes she would just refuse to go down them. Starting round Christmas, she was almost always refusing to descend- and when she did, it was a very uncontrolled, throw-yourself-down-and-hope-for-the-best slip slide towards the mulch piled near the steps. Even when her dinner was at the foot of the steps, she was resisting- definitely a worrisome sign. (fwiw- when she refused to go down the stairs, DH would carry her down the steps; I would take her out the side entrance, which has just one step.)

Last Monday she visited the holistic vet, who does chiro and acupuncture. We hadn't seen her since early November, and the vet was distressed at the atrophy she saw in Kimber's back end. In addition to the acupuncture, she did some e-stim. (Kimber happily munched her way through an entire box of Buddy Biscuits, almost completely ignoring the treatment.)

Since then, Kimber has been unhesitatingly going down the front steps! She's doing so in a controlled manner! She's not knuckling over quite as much, and she has some spring in her step!

That's great! I so love the holistic methods. I mean drugs have their place but sometimes a good crack does the trick.

Awesome update! With a little exercise for her back end she may get some muscle tone back.

So glad she is doing better! I wish we had places like that around here--my 12 yr old Molly is having problems with getting up, etc, & I know she is losing muscle in her hind end--could be bad hips, arthritis.....will have the vet look at her again soon. I'm going to have to get her one of those lifting harnesses in case she falls & I can't get her up.....Please keep us posted on how Kimber does......

This vet lives about 1.5 hours away but once a month, she comes to our local rehab vet's clinic to see patients. We do our best to go each month, but in December we had already planned to be on vacation and so we had to miss the opportunity. Really, I wasn't sure if the treatments were doing much for her but the positive impact of this visit has reaffirmed their importance.

Our local rehab vet also suggested trying the water treadmill again. Kimber *hated* it last time, but that was four years ago. We'll give it a shot.
