Goderich-Prettiest Town in Canada, or so the Queen is suppose to have said when visiting. This past Saturday, went up, first to get haircuts in Clinton and then on to see my Mom. We had a little time to kill before picking up Mom, so we decided to do a mini-travalogue. Goderich now has two main industries, the salt mine which I think is one of the largest salt mines in the world. I've never had an opportunity to go down, but I've seen some photo and it looks really interesting. The other one would be the harbour for Great Lakes shipping. When Andrew and I lived in Goderich, it was an enjoyable pastime to go to the lake and watch the freighters. Amazed us how the small tugs could get the freighters turned around.
View of Lake Huron from the shore.
Another view from the bluffs. Goderich is also famous for its sunsets. In the summer on Friday night they have a bagpiper, pipe down the sun. A nice tradition.
The public library. It's an Andrew Carnegie Library. Several years ago they did an addition and it blends in well with the old structure. I spent a lot of time roaming around the shelves.
The Courthouse Square, which is actually an octagon. Yep, the main street is eight sided. I spent a lot of time driving around, and around the "Square" as a teenager. In 2013, Goderich had a tornado sweep through town. Most of the mature trees on the Square were destroyed, as were several historic buildings and homes throughout town.
The Bedford Hotel. If we weren't driving around the Square, in our youth, we were at the Bedford aka, "The Duke." Depending on our mood either the quiet side, or the noisy side. Now, I go for the quiet side and to be honest I'm not sure the noisy side exist. Maybe a sports bar now??
The Huron Historic Gaol. Like the Square, it's eight sided. I think it was the sight of the last public hanging in Canada. Also, one of the Black Donnellys was held here.
The Pioneer Museum, an interesting spot to spend an afternoon looking around. It has changed from when I first went there as a grade fiver, but the creaky stairs in the original building are still there.
And last, but not least the best bakery going. Their cream doughnuts are superb. On a summer Saturday, you'd better be early, or order in advance, they disappear so quickly.
Our purchase, cream doughnuts and a jar of maple syrup!
Hope you enjoyed the tour. Share some photos of your home town??

Clinton is my OH's home town, as Kleb knows, I think. He worked for a while in Goderich and spent some time cruising around that circle, looking for pretty girls. It's sad we don't go back as much but my MIL (who really was no relation of OH at all but acted the part) passed away and it's just harder to get there to see the people we still know. We often went to see the sunset.

Great post! Interesting pictures and memories to go along. Great Big Sea's 'Dear Home Town' was playing in my head as I read through it.
