    Help with new Rescue Dog

    Hello,

My girlfriend and I have a 5 year old black lab that is very calm for the most part that likes to take walks. We have tried rescuing another lab that was about 1 year old but she was too energetic for our lab and they did not get along and go very aggressive towards each other. So we had to give her back to the rescue. Well there is a 8 year old senior male lab that is at a foster home but the foster parents are moving and cant take the senior dog. If no one adopts the senior lab he will go into boarding and we do not want that. We want to adopt him to keep him out of boarding. We had him over the other day with the foster mom and they got along when they were on neutral territory but when we brought him back to our house our black lab started growling and barking at the senior lab. We feel the our lab is just being territorial and protecting his house. We were wondering if there is any tips to get them to get along. Both labs are very laid back and act very similar in the way they act. We don't want the senior male lab go into boarding so we are willing to try any suggestions to get them to get along. Also the foster mom states that the senior male has been around her 2 other dogs and not had any problems.

    Thank You.

Hi, sorry can't be of help with experience, as only had a one dog household. But am thinking of 2 in the future. Did a little search and found some articles. Hopefully board members who have dogs, especially introducing older dogs can give you their experience and some advise.

    Here's what I found:
Introducing a New Dog to Your Resident Dog | petMD
Introducing Your New Dog to Your Other Dogs : The Humane Society of the United States

Wishing you luck and fingers crossed you can help this ole guy enjoy his remaining days with you and yours.

Some will say as long as no blood is drawn let them sort it out among them selves.

Our two usually play well, a bit aggressive but no major issues. Sometimes they growl, and show teeth but it never goes to the point where we have to intervene.

We often joke they are still working out who is alpha.
