    Just Saved a Dog

I was walking Gabe and saw a dog running and sniffing. No collar. A Portuguese Water dog. I observed for a minute to see if he/she would go back home, but no, just sniffing and running free. I run back home with Gabe, unclip his collar and take off after the water dog. Run thru my subdivision yelling "sit" and throwing treats. Dog keeps running, then across a busy road that people drive too fast on. I ran across the road chasing dog and people are slamming on brakes, asking if they can help.(There are a lot of good people when they see someone running with an open collar and leash).

I ran chasing dog, lost him/her in the edge of the subdivision-what do I do? Stand silent and listen, other dogs barking-go run fast I see dog sitting in driveway up close to the house. Maybe I can trap dog! But no, a bark and the door opens and a lady's head comes out with the look of bewilderment on her face.

"Buster" she says and who are you? I am the person that is trying to save your dog!! Breathing heavy from the running and it is cold and I am old (67) The family comes out of the house and from Pakistan. The family is so nice to me.

We started talking and they had a black lab before this dog, died of a spleen mass. I told them about my Cracker and we all hugged and cried. The Mother called me an angel.

Ugh did they even know that their dog got out? A few years ago I was out for a jog when i came across a black lab wondering around the road. It came over to me. Looked to be a senior. I called the number on the tag. I told the owner that I found their dog on the road. They're like "oh. He always walks outside. " I said, "you're dog is walking ON THE ROAD. Come get him." They got him and kinda were annoyed that I called. Like it's a regular thing their dog does. Some people...

So happy that the dog got back home safe and sound. Thank you for stopping to help him, and agree I think it was meant for you to find new friends.

No they had no idea he was out-maybe that is was upset me a little and I schooled them in awareness of a valued family member. They were well aware of it from previous dogs, but I just reinforced the idea. They agreed more vigilance was needed by all members of the family.

But they were super nice people and I went over the crating procedures when workmen come to the house also. They had not been using the crate for some time. I told them it was the dog's sanctuary in times of stress also and they agree.

Overall a very good discuss of dog behavior and people responsibility and they were very open to it.

A good day indeed for all involved and I got a little more exercise than I planned for that morning.

You are an angel. I think most of us here already knew that. They sound like pretty nice people too.
