We watched our neighbor's German Shepherd, Gregor, this weekend. Gregor is a big love bug but his appetite often goes "off" when he's away from his owner; our neighbor said just to keep offering him food and don't worry if he turns it down. So we put the fancy kibble and a big heap of wet food in the bowl and every now and then Gregor would nibble a tiny bit. We kept the bowl out in the kitchen so he could nibble freely.
Well. Guess who wanted to be a VERY GOOD HOSTESS and HELP GREGOR clean his plate? (At least, I'm sure that's the story she would've given us.)
Now, Kimber's back end has weakened so that she will only walk on carpet or on the runners we've put down on the hardwood floors. She can enter the kitchen via runner, but I had a clear sightline to that entry from the couch and every time she oh-so-casually sauntered into the kitchen, I'd yell out, "Leave it, Kimber", and she'd hurry back out, all Miss Innocent. The other kitchen entry would mean walking about 10 feet away from the runners, something she hasn't done in months, so I felt pretty secure with the setup.
So that was it for most of the day.
Then, come evening, I realized Kimber was out of sight and what was that sound? It sounded a LOT like nails on a hardwood floor. And Gregor was snoozing on the couch next to me. I jumped up and looked over the kitchen island. Sure enough, Miss Kimber had gone through the 'back way', forsaking the security of the runner, risking the slippery wood floor, so she could get at the dish. She jumped back when I said, "Kimber! You leave it! Not yours!" and immediately scampered to the runner entry. But she was wagging her tail and licking her lips, so I think the thought bubble was, "Totes worth it."
And that's how much Kimber wanted to eat Gregor's food.

What did you expect from a lab when food is available?

Good girl, Kimber.
A true Labrador! Good job Miss Kimber!
She may be a little slow moving but she knows the move to make. That really makes me smile.
