Lawrence, KS, has a great dog park area

Zach and I are just back from Lawrence's GREAT dog park -- "Mutt Run" -- where he met lots of other dogs and did some retrieving. It's only a couple miles away from our apartment and, with only one stoplight and one stop sign between us, it's quick and easy to visit.

(Topeka also has a "dog park" but when we lived there, it was only a fairly small fenced-in area (no benches) in the park area near the zoo; it has absolutely no comparison with "Mutt Run.")

Lawrence's "Mutt Run" is within the Clinton Lake Corps of Engineers reservation and has a fenced in space about 3/4 the size of a US football field adjoining a VERY large area with miles of trails. Adjacent to its parking area, between the fenced in area and at the start/finish of the trails, is an area with benches, running water and hoses, kiddy pools, toilets for peeps, a shelter with tables (for those with meals) and benches, and a large, always well-mowed field. This being Saturday, a little before noon, there were 24+ cars parked, half of whose passengers were walking the trails with their off-leash dogs and the other half enjoying watching their off-leash dogs interact, play &/or retrieve in the unfenced area next to the parking lot. Zach and I've only sampled a couple trails -- one maybe 3/4 mile, the other about a mile -- which go next to streams, in woods, through fields, etc. We usually stay next to the parking lot, find a bench in the shade and let Zach socialize (off leash) with other dogs and exchange learning their first and last names (sniff crotches & butts).

I had the good fortune to visit Lawrence several times in the 70's and 80's. Wonderful place.

Sounds like a great dog park!
