He is three, so I would probably opt for training him to not use the bed as his b!tch. If he were a puppy I would take it away until he was mature enough to be a big kid about it.
Ok so our 3 year old Chocolate Lab was very comfortable sleeping on our old leather sofa. Well we got rid of it and bought him a beautiful comfortable dog sofa from Sky Mall. Thinking he'd love it. Well all he seems to do is hump it, chew on the ends and pull the center cushion out. Once in a while he'll lay in it. So my question is am I dreaming thinking he'll eventually start using it or do I need to train him into it or let him "have his way" with it or do I just claim defeat and get rid of it.

Some dogs like dog beds, some don't. You may have spent the $$ for nothing.

Welcome to the bed eating dog club. I've given up on that one.
I would keep it, he may start sleeping on it.
If it was me, I would take it away and store it, buy the world's cheapest possible dog pillow and train him on that, taking it away while I wasn't around then graduate to the couch. When my dogs went to a trainer, the first thing we were taught was to get the dogs to go to a bed, lie down and stay there. It's very useful for all kinds of situations.
Macy is a member of the Bed Eating Dog Club too. She has an expensive bed and chewed a hole in it right away and has never slept on it. She doesn't chew it anymore but she's a Humper. It's the only thing she humps. She's monogamous.
Ha mine too! My Ajax is crazy for a pillow in his bed. In his crate we have dog beds plus some of our old pillows - he regularly pulls out 1 pillow and has his way with it. That's the only thing he does it to though - its only one pillow, even though he has heaps in his crate! So bizarre!
