    Nesting Cardinals now?

A pair of Cardinals built a nest in one of our trees last week and today I see three eggs in it. I don't know Isn't it a little late in the season to start a family? Cold weather really doesn't set in down here around the Gulf till mid December so I'm hoping the bird know what they are doing. The nest is only shoulder high and is right in the path to the back yard so i guess I'm going to have to be careful when I mow the next several weeks. Hopefully the parents stick around and raise the chicks and not take off.
    Here's the nest and eggs.

I've got a pair of Cardinals in a tree in my back yard, not sure what the nesting situation is at the moment as I can't see their nest. I had a baby robin in the back yard, saw him the first time Monday. He was to small to fly, and soaking wet from the rain Monday. I scooped him up a couple time and put him is safe spots from the dogs the past couple days. Luck ran out for him today, Brooks got him and it was all over. Second one this year, and 2 or 3 (plus the odd baby bunny) seem to meet the same fate every year.

I've never seen a cardinal--we don't have them around here. I wouldn't think it is too late for them to raise the chicks--I think once they hatch they're ready to fly by 6 weeks or so, but I'm no expert on that! Sounds like you will be able to keep an eye on them & you can let us know how they do!

It looks like cardinals can have 2 broods per nesting season, so maybe this is family #2 for this Momma. That should be fun to watch, assuming the nest stays in place!

    Exciting!

Once again we had robins build a nest over the front porch light. Dingy laid two eggs in the edging for the garden before she finally laid four in the nest. Three have fledged and are gone and have taken down the nest. One odd colored egg left behind. Those three babies sure crammed the nest full. Had to use the back door during the entire process so as not to disturb Mom.

My neighbour has baby robins and baby chickadees in two nests right at her front door, right now. She says the parent birds don't seem bothered by her and her husbands comings and goings.

Plenty of time, especially in your area. You're looking at a month total turnaround.
