What is a black and white cake?

Someone asked for a black and white cake today and I got all kinds of results on the internet. Is this supposed to be something in particular or should I just alternate chocolate fudge and white cake?

A bakery in Durham, NC (Mad Hatter) calls the black and white it's signature cake. Here's their description:

    Black and White
    (Our Signature Cake)

Alternating layers of chocolate and white cake filled with chocolate fudge icing and white buttercream. Iced with white buttercream and covered with poured chocolate ganache.

There's a photo of it on the top of their home page. They are really yummy!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

I think it is 3 layers, chocolate, white, chocolate. It isn't a bunch of thin layers. There are a lot of recipe variations for a black and white cake online, aren't there? This is the only one I've had.

There are and they're kind of all over the board. The weird thing is that this guy doesn't like chocolate according to my husband so I don't know what he's thinking but I'm making that Mad Hatter cake - or something like it, I hope.
