Not at all. Closed mouth to me could indicate submission, fear, apprehension, not hot, comfortable or any manner of things. I swear when Oban is being defiant he is smiling. "I've got your glo-oves. Nyah, nyah, na, na, nyah."
Maybe a stupid question..
I asked this question once before and really never got any response.
Moses really came a long way in the last couple of months ( really thankful)
I had two labs previously. Both smiled from day one ( both no behavior issues)
Moses had a serious look from day one..(this was one of the first things I noticed)
Moses had better features then (Ruben and Eli) but never smiled
I have no proof but I firmly believe that puppies that do not smile..are more prone to be defiant.
Moses made a turn for the better..and the first time he smiled was when he learned how to swim @ 7.5 months
It also made a change for the better in him.
Moses now smiles
Question is
Do you think puppies that don't smile have a tendency to be more defiant..?
Not at all. Closed mouth to me could indicate submission, fear, apprehension, not hot, comfortable or any manner of things. I swear when Oban is being defiant he is smiling. "I've got your glo-oves. Nyah, nyah, na, na, nyah."
No. I don't think there is any correlation between "smiling" and tendency toward defiance. I think temperament is largely governed by breeding, early socialization, and inherent differences in personality amongst individual puppies.
No, don't believe so. I noticed some labs with a more serious look.

Jax smiles all the time except when he is told to kennel. He doesn't mind the kennel.but he knows this means he doesn't get to go with us.

Bobby is a frequent smiler and he is a very naughty, cheeky boy at times.

Definitely not! Ozzy smiled all the time and god love him, that boy was a challenge from day one! Maxx smiles constantly and has been the greatest dog from day one! Two very different dogs but they were/are full of smiles always.

Ozzy - 10/2002 - 06/2011 - Rest well my sweet boy. You are forever remembered, forever missed, forever in my heart.
Nope I haven't noticed that, at least with Kain.

See those smiles?
We didn't have Sunnie as a puppy, so I have no idea of what she was like/what training she had/how resistant she was...but she's tough to work with because she's so neurotic and detects blame when there is none.
Her boy Danny has been a breeze.
All but one of my Labs was a "smiler"....two of the smilers were tough to train (a male whom we got older and a female puppy) and the non-smiler (a male we got as a puppy) was easy.
I've always thought of "smiling" as being purely related to muscle structure/quirks.
