    Death

My next door neighbors dog died very tragically yesterday. We transported him to the vet to be cremated in the back of our expedition. My dog Oakley and Diesel were great buddies. He was about 90 lbs and she is 27 lbs. I have always heard that if you have two dogs in your household and one dies that you should let the remaining dog sniff at the dead one so they will realize that he is gone. Oakley did sniff around in the expedition this morning but I wonder if at 15 weeks old she could tell that he had passed away. Any thoughts? It's so sad to see her looking for him to come out to play. RIP Diesel.

So sorry to hear about your loss of Diesel. Oakley will be looking for him - so very sad.

Polly was here when Duchess died, but she still cried for her every morning - she was only 8 months old and became more clingy to me. My thoughts are with you.

I'm so sorry for your neighbour's loss.

I do believe my crew realized their house mate had died and was not coming back when I brought the body home for burial and allowed them to sniff. Cats and dogs, either/or being the deceased. When I haven't done that there has been a prolonged searching for the missing critter, calling out and behavioural changes.

When we put Nikko down Mia did not sniff the body, but she was in the car at the vet. She knew immediately that he was gone.

I am so sorry for the loss of Diesel. It is hard to know if sniffing, after the fact, will help Oakley understand. He will probably look for his buddy for a while.

    Godspeed Diesel.
