Fish Oil & Vitamin E

I don't recall if there was a consensus on a recommendation to give Vitamin E if your dog is getting fish oil supplementation.

I usually give the dogs Grizzly Salmon Oil, which contains only salmon oil, no vit E or tocopherols. I have Fish oil capsules that contain tocopherols, but that bottle pretty much just takes up room in the cabinet, since I thought GSO seemed to be a preferred source. I'm giving fish oil at the recommendation of the vet as as anti-inflammatory after Lark had some limping last summer, so both of mine get 3-4 squirts a day. I want to make sure they get enough of the fish oil to do what it's supposed to do, if it was "just" for their coats, I would cut back or eliminate it since we don't have issues there. I've been giving the GSO for about a year with no apparent issues, but I read something recently to make me wonder if I need to throw in a Vitamin E capsule now and then. Does anyone have any other info? I just cannot recall what the thoughts on this were.

I had the same problem, so much conflicting info. I didn't seem to notice a difference whether I was giving vit. E or not.

But, it was finally settled when I talked with Indy's oncologist, who is brilliant. He prescribed both fish oil and vit E daily. He was adamant that he needs the vit E too, so that's what we've been doing for a year or so.

I'm still not convinced and when I asked my Vet he couldn't find anything to back up the need for more Vit. E if giving fish oil. The link above, to my mind, does not explain it at all. I read the link within the link and it looks like the filler (carbohydrate) in your dog food is more likely to deplete Vit E than fish oil is, and that link is on cattle.

The section on Vit E does not give amounts. What is "massive" dosing of fish oil? Am I giving massive amounts? Mine isn't even all fish oil, it's partly from flax and borage and is a 3-6-9. Also,no mention is made of the dangers of overdosing on Vit E which are well documented and which can lead to internal bleeding as Vit E acts as a blood thinner.

If I'm being exceptionally dense and someone wants to try to explain what I'm missing that you all are apparently seeing please go ahead. FWIW Oban gets two a day of these: Omega 3-6-9 1,200 mg | Jamieson They do have a bit of Vit. E.

ETA: Damnation, contraindicated if on cyclosporine and he just started back on Atopica for the summer allergy season. Crapola. Whole thing just became a moot point for me, quitting. But still interested as Oban is not on Atopica in winter.

I don't do Vit. E daily, but I throw it in, 2-3x a week.

From my research fish oil can deplete the body of E over time, same in humans, and the reason to give both if your fish oil does not contain vit. E.

I give 400 IUs of vitamin E about three times a week, and daily fish oil.

Ugh - this is another one I can't figure out. I give Grizzly and have for a few years now, but only one squirt a day (probably should give more, but we always end up with loose stool). I don't give Vitamin E. I called Grizzly and they told me you do not need to supplement with Vitamin E, but I don't how much they really know.

Both our regular vet and the specialist who saw Sunnie when she had elevated liver enzyme levels recommended vitamin E along with the fish oil.

These guys get the fish oil daily and the Vitamin E 3X a week.
