MN Dog dies from swimming in algae poisoned lake

I saw this last night and I was so scared. There was also another case where another dog died, this time when swimming in a lake with no visible algae growth. It makes me scared to have Bacon do his favorite thing, go swimming in the lake. What do you all think? Should I and all other MN dog owners be keeping our dogs out of the lakes for a while? They are attributing the increase in growth this year to our heavy rainfalls which bring nutrients to the algae. So scary guys. To think their dog went from playing to having crossed the bridge in less than 30 minutes...

Truly sad story, but would think something definitely to be warned about. With the strange weather pattern we had this year and really last, we really need to watch what's going on in our environment. Lots of molds out there, to where people are being affected by allergies that never had it before. Now algae that is highly dangerous.

Would definitely watch lakes for excess algae. Thanks so much for sharing. Definitely important to know.

From my understanding, the algae was visible.

In the case of Copper, yes. There is another case (it has not yet been covered on the news) where there was no visible algae growth and the dog died. The story was posted by a local vet.

Better safe than sorry then, avoid lakes while algae bloom.

That is really scary. I don't know if I can tell what toxic algae looks like.

Thats the scariest part. Even if you can say you know its Blue-green algae, there is no way to tell if its toxic or not. Makes me scared to have Bacon swim.
