The article is ostensibly about Virginia and Alabama fighting over the training facility, but the interesting part is about the labradors who are trained there! Dogfight Pits GOP Lawmakers Against Each Other For Canine Training Center : NPR

It is unfortunate that labs are so good at this task and drug stiffing. Both highly dangerous jobs.

Years ago, a previous lab of my niece's had such a high search drive, that he would escape and bring back deer haunches (they lived in the country)! My niece finally couldn't deal with him anymore and got him accepted to a similar program. He ended up being a drug detection dog at the Seoul Olympics!
It's fascinating. I have heard of other breeds used in some settings, particularly if they need to be physically smaller so they can climb into spaces. When I saw a dog working for TSA at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, it was a small Turvuren (I think. Mid-sized, upright ears, not a GSD.) When we went to the Royal Tattoo (military bands competition) held at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, there was a Brittany being worked in and around the stands, and bathrooms.
But I think the other thing about labs is that they want to please and they'll work with almost anyone.
Our CO friend (game warden) had one of Ontario's early Detector Dogs. She was a CNIB guide dog failure, just too much energy as the article says, to be paired with a blind person. Our friend lost weight and trimmed up himself, keeping up to her.
