We tend to shop at a grocery store that is always mobbed. I couldn't even tell you a time it is slow. When we shop, we are a well oiled machine. We both get carts and shop separately then merge and go off again. Sometimes we swap carts or divide things so that one can go through Express and go do something else while the other finishes or if we need separate receipts. There is very little communication. We're just trying to get the job done and get out.
Unfortunately, this causes some problems. Not long ago, I had to explain to someone that the man who just took off with my cart was not stealing my purse. I just had to run back and get something. Or I know that's not my cart but it is my husband's so that's why I just put some stuff in it. Usually I find it kind of funny.
Today though we met at the line and I said, "I need to go first. Could you back up?" The cashier was so mad. I got in front of my husband's cart and unloaded it (potatoes come out first so they go back in first) and she turned to the customer in front of me and said, "I didn't realize they were together." Even though she figured it out, she was so nasty to me afterward.
From now on I'm just going to announce to no one in particular, "We're together!" and proceed.

If you want to have a little fun with it, you say, "Marco" and let hubby say "Polo". People will get it and you get a giggle.

You're lucky. I have to drag DH screaming and kicking to the grocery store and that's only about once a year. He will do a quick stop by himself for a single item if I ask but otherwise no way.

That's funny, I MUCH prefer going to the grocery store by myself. I'll buy anything that gets put on the list but if he puts pickles on the list, I'm not going to bring home 6 jars of the same kind of pickles when there are at least 2 jars at home in the refrigerator already. That reliably happens if he goes. Plus, they have to be refrigerated so where is everything else supposed to go? He's fairly insistent about joining me if he's not working the day I go to the store but I'd have to pretty much be hospitalized for him to stop by the grocery store otherwise. Give him his own cart? Not likely. Funny how different styles work for different people.
