Aye Mates,
WORKING THE WIND ~ Me pup gun dog trainee "MAC" is seen running directly into the wind, his head elevated to allow his nose to pick up the scent o' pheasants on the wind will guide him through the heavy cover to make flush o' the bird for the gunners. I love watching all o' the training coming together for a young pup under actual field conditions. MAC just turned nine months old on 11-22-18.
There's a well known saying amongst those that regularly work with highly trained sporting dogs - "trust the dog". The reference made by this mantra is that though behaviors being exhibited by the working dog may at the moment seem a bit illogical, these amazing dogs have enhanced abilities that humans have trouble comprehending. We work so hard training these dogs and becoming a team with them, we must have faith that they often know best.
Cheers,

That's all the was running through my mind at Brooks's 3rd hunt test on the first water mark. He took the grand tour of the lake, fetching a large stick at one point. Luckily his nose took over and he winded the bird, making the retrieve and bring the bird to hand.
I must have said "trust your dog" in my head about 500 times during that retrieve!
