    Safety in the bed?

Hey guys, long time no talk to. Due to some changes, I have occupied my crew cab with car seats and no longer have time for two 80+ pound labs. I still need to find a way to get to the boys to the farm. Has anybody tried running a tether between front tie down hooks and hooking harnesses to said tether? I know it’s not ideal, but I have to be able to transport toddlers and labs.

Can you secure a crate? That’s the only thing I can think of. Anything else and my mind goes to- what if you stopped short or rear ended an obstacle? What if you got bumped? What if they saw something and tried to jump out of the bed? Shudder.

My idea is that they would only have enough lead to have their heads over the side of the bed.

Gunner makes some transport crates, but I cannot afford two of them at this time

    Safety in the bed?

I would never ever consider putting my dogs in the bed of my truck unless they were fully secured in crates. I live in rural Oregon and the number of disasters I’ve seen from dogs in the beds of trucks makes me sick, tethered or not. All it takes is one small accident.

No. As said above, you might find out even a very short tether can do horrible damage to a dog when the brakes go on hard. Some places it's illegal to transport that way. Put a cap on the bed?

Well, you could put the car seats in the bed...

I kid. But yeah, either a really safe crate, or take the dogs separately from the children so you can temporarily take out the car seats and let the dogs ride in the cabin.

Secure crates in the bed is the only way I would let my dog ride in the back of our truck.

I looked at the interior dimensions and I doubt two 80 pound Labs would fit in there together.

You could always use a couple Vari Kennel type kennels until you could afford something better. Just strap them down. I agree it's not the safest type kennels, but it's much better than tethering the dogs in the back.
