    schutzhund traing

I attended a shutzhund training seminar with a friend & her dog this past weekend.. It was very intense & I couldn't imagine Abby working like this. She has a very "soft" personality & we train with mostly with positive re-enforcement. I was wondering if anyone on the board participated in this venue with their lab?

I don't think many labs have the temperament or it, especially the bite work.

I took Archie to a trainer who knows German shepherds well and owns several herself. The facility mainly trains K9 dogs and it is very intense, not what I would put a lab through.

No, labs arent commonly a breed that are used for schutzhund training. They dont have the temperament for it. Labs are bred and known for there outstanding temperaments, personally i think it would be wrong to use a lab for that kind of training.

German Shepherds, Rotties, Dobermans are more commonly used

I've never seen a Lab in Schutzhund or any of the other protection sports. Normal Labs don't have the bite and intensity that the GSDs, Malinois, etc, have. Lab's mouths are designed to be soft to carry a bird without damaging it, and not holding and gripping bite sleeves!!

I've seen some people try with Labs - but the dogs would fail bite work. Soft mouths. That and it's undesirable and unusual for them to have the temperament and drive for that.

Personally, no, but I know one person who did. If you do a search online, you can find some Labs who participated in the sport.

Thanks to all for their input on my question. While watching this seminar I could really see how these breeds were different from my lab. It was interesting but definitely not for us.

I would imagine that you could train a lab to do the work. But it would require a lot more work since you' done going against what there genetic we're made to do. And like other have said no way they would actually be good.
