We have a truck and my prius, so Bacon just sits in the back seat, so I am of no help!
What kind of car do you guys drive with your dogs? I am looking for a suv/crossover with enough cargo space to fit a dog crate. Safety in a car matter!!!

I have a Honda CRV and a 48" crate fits well.
Honda Odyssey here.
I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee, fits a large crate no problem
I have an Outback, but I haven't tried setting up the crate in there. I don't think it would fit, but he loves hanging out in the back and we use that vehicle for quicker in town trips so the crate doesn't come along.
Bonus #1: My guy grinning at me from the back of the Outback. I bet a travel crate would likely fit back there, but not his standard 48" crate.
For longer trips we use an extended cab Tundra that has the back seats removed. There is enough room for his 48" crate back there. But we usually don't set it up. Spoiled pup has a ton of room back there, and we can't take passengers anywhere since the seats are removed!
Bonus: pic of Thor all ready for a road trip. No crate set up this time, but there is enough space for it between the driver seat and the back of the truck cab. It's a little tricky to get it in the door but once in it folds out nicely. If we don't use the crate, we can attach a harness to him and anchor it to the truck, but we don't always do that. He has a bed on the floor and toys - we do a lot of long road trips so it's good that he's happy and comfortable.
I just recently bought a new Hyundai Tuscon. Opened the back up at the dealers, had a good look, did a bit of measuring and thought a crate would fit no problem.
The crate does not fit.
Whatever you get, bring the crate with you and put it in the car before you buy.

We have a 2001LS and a 2009LTZ Suburban as well as an Envoy, gas guzzling a bit but defiantly feel safe.
The safest vehicle is the one that keeps you out of an accident.
This looks expensive but appears well made and boasts crash tested safe in a rear end crash.

I drive a Dodge Magnum (wagon). I can fit a 36" crate if I fold down one side of the back seat.
Have a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Bought a 36" crate for Archie. It fits with the back seats folded down.
