    Ram vs. raccoon

I woke up this morning a little after 3:00am due to one of my nightly hot flashes, so as usual I get a drink of water and go back to bed. But this morning Ram also got up with me, so I let him out to pee. When I opened the back door Ram ran out and started barking and I saw a raccoon on top of my neighbour’s shed which is up against our shared fence. I don’t know if Ram startled the raccoon, but instead of staying in my neighbour’s yard it jumped down into my yard right where Ram was standing barking at him.

Now there’s a scuffle with Ram and the raccoon in the back corner of my yard. So I grab my broom and run outside to break it up and the raccoon climbs up a tree in my yard. Ram then stands at the bottom of the tree and barks again at the raccoon, which is looking down and growling at him. I finally grab him by the scruff of his neck and pull back in the house. Was I ever glad that it was still early and dark, because I only had my pajama shorts on.

I checked Ram all over and he was fine, but that was so scary. The last time he went after something it was a beaver when he was swimming in creek and the beaver slapped him in the head with his tail.

Scary indeed. Raccoons can be nasty creatures and inflict a lot of damage.

That is scary! Glad he's ok.

Is it bad that I had a little chuckle about getting slapped by a beaver?

Pound for pound I bet a racoon can outfight a dog any day. Glad Ram wasn't hurt. We hear young racoons squabbling in the compost at night. It sounds like one of them is being horribly injured but there is never any blood on the ground.

Huh, I spelled racoon with one "c" but it seems this site wants it spelled with two. Now my head is saying neither spelling looks right.

Yikes! Glad Ram is okay, and yourself! Those raccoons are nasty. I would get whole families in my yard, they would come in the front and knock my water wiggler out of my bird bath. I think they officially broke it because even with new batteries I can't get it working right. They are very aggressive and they will stand their ground. I had a couple hissing at me once when I tried to shoo them out of my garden late one night. I threw a ball in their direction, did not even respond. Yuck.

I bet he will be back, too. Keep an eye out and be safe. Creepy little night bandits.

Glad everything is ok. I know what you mean though always on the lookout for those critters. I have a possum that started appearing in my yard recently.

One way to look at the positive, at least it wasn't a skunk. Can you imagine dealing with that at night in your pajama shorts.

Glad Ram is ok and you both got back inside safely they can be pretty nasty.

Have to wonder if the raccoon seen the commercial with the lady needing glasses(here kitty kitty) and was hoping to snuggle up in your bed for the night.

We fear a skunk because Mocha's kitty sister is a black and white tuxedo cat. If he sees a skunk in the yard he might think its Duchess!

My dad had a large garden which attracts raccoon's for miles around. He uses a "Have a Heart" trap but that is a misnomer as he sends them to the happy hunting ground. He has dispatched at least 15 this summer. They just keep coming.

    Very happy Ram is OK

Those things can be pretty mean. More than one coon hunter has lost his hound to one.
