FYI Trifexis is apparently causing deaths but not proved yet

Owners, vets reporting even more deaths suspected to be... | www.wsbtv.com

I personally haven't tried this medication as something that can kill flees and ticks which are on the outside of the dogs body vs the inside just sounds too scary to me .... and it turns out my instincts are probably right, read the article if you are thinking of using those meds or are doing so already.

Did not opt for that when Archie had a reaction to Heartgard, changed to Sentinel.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully research will be done.

I used Trifexis on Gabby for a few months, and didn't have a problem. Once she weighed enough to go into the over 60lbs pill, it was miserable. She threw up within 20 minutes of taking it, 2 months in a row. Plus, it's an enormous pill and it stinks to high heaven - it had me gagging as soon as I opened the pack, and she didn't want anything to do with it. Effective...yes...worth the trouble...no. She's on Heartgard and Nexgard now and gobbles them down like they're the greatest treat around.

Very troubling. We don't use it but know people who do.

Lola has been on it for about 8 months and we've never had a problem. The pill can be chewed or swallowed. We normally cover it in peanut butter and it goes right down intact. Lola is due for her annual heartworm test next week, so we'll discuss this with our vet.

So if a dog can't handle a topical (like Frontline) for fleas, what are the options for a hearworm and flea treatment?

Advantage Multi works the same way and I've never had a problem with it. To be honest, I think any chemical insecticide that is being applied on the skin or taken orally can do harm... you never know how a body will react to it. But you have to weigh the risk vs. benefits all the time.

We use Trifexis because Frontline and Advantage just didn't work for us against fleas. It is one huge nasty smelling pill and every month I have to conceal it in some way to get Cassie to eat it. (When I open the package she can smell it and then tries to avoid me as long as possible.)
It does work, though, and I'm afraid to change, because having a fleas infestation is not something I every want again!
I wish Elanco would make it more palatable.

    Wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole.

Rivers had a bad reaction to Iverheart after a few years of taking Heartguard - which is supposedly the same stuff.

Switched both dogs to Sentinal, haven't had issues since.
