TEAM TRAD has been busy this summer. We attended two double AKC Hunt Tests in July hosted by the Maine Retriever Trial Club and the Penobscot Hunting Retriever Club that resulted in TRAD receiving his first two qualifying legs toward an AKC JUNIOR HUNTER TITLE. This past weekend on 8/2 and 8/3, we entered two AKC Hunt Tests hosted by the Colonial Retriever Trial Club and the Labrador Retriever Club of Greater Boston respectively, TRAD at 11 months of age was the youngest retriever entered in both events.
The water series on 8/3 was among one of the more challenging set ups I had seen at the Junior Stakes level and the judges were up front in stating that they were going to make dog / handler teams work for a pass. Many dogs that had been called back to work the water series were elimimated there. TRAD and I may easily have been among those eliminated had I not decided to "handle" him to the first single water mark which he had initially been taking a good line to, but then drifted wide to the right (bird scent coming from the second gunning station likely the causative factor). Good solid recall to the whistle and the ability to take an "OVER" cast directionally to his right, put TRAD on top of the mark. The second mark which I perceived to be the more difficult of the two, was easily handled by TRAD. TRAD made classic deliveries to hand of both birds by coming to HEEL and SIT on my left side and holding the bird gently until I issued the "GIVE" command for him to release the bird into my hand. Overall, I could not have been much more pleased with his performance.
TRAD earned his AKC JUNIOR HUNTER TITLE prior to his first birthday and exactly one month to the day before the anniversary of the sudden loss of my beloved retriever AKC WILDROSE CAYDEN JH, SH on 9/3/13. I have been honored to work with a number of fine sporting dogs in my life, but none that have contributed as significantly as did CAYDEN to my overall abilities and skills as a trainer. I cannot help but think that CAYDEN was watching over TRAD and myself during the Hunt Tests this weekend, with his wise and approving eyes from beyond. CAYDEN, this one is for you my friend.
