    Do dogs need insect repellent?

Does anyone know if insects, such as mosquitos bother dogs when hiking? Cori is already on Frontline and Heartgard of course, but I am wondering about other insects we could encounter on our 3 day hike. I don't want to put the stuff I use on her because she would probably lick some of it off.

Yes bugs will uh bug our dogs too. I use this:

In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 1 cup of water. To make a scented solution so you do not smell like bitter vinegar all day, add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Eucalyptus oil is a calm, soothing scent that also works as a tick repellent, while peppermint and citrus oils give off a strong crisp scent that also repel ticks.

I like Farnham's horse roll-on that I can only buy at a tack shop. The main ingredient is pyrethrins, which are a natural ingredient but still, I wash it off when we get back home. It's great for keeping the deer flies off both of us, I run a swipe down my bare parts too. With the roll-on I can run it down his nose, around his eyes, behind his ears, down his ears, down his back to his bum and his underarms and do myself and my hands stay clean. I stick it in a pocket to reapply on a long walk or after a swim.

You can also use Avon skin-so-soft oil spray

I use my horse's fly repellent. Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle keeps buggers away too.

I like a product called vetri repel you can find on Amazon or most vets have it. All natural repellent. I prefer wipes over spray so you can wipe nose and ears. Spray would get into eyes

Great ideas. Did not know "fly" spray for horses could be used on dogs. Pyrethrins, I believe, is made from chrysanthemums. It can also be used to get rid of cockroaches. It is a natural product.

Great tips from all - thanks! The mosquitoes seem to love poor Gabby's face, right above her nose.
