When to spay re: heat cycle

Luna's last heat cycle was March 31. It was her first heat so we don't know if her cycles will be 6 months, 8 months, etc. I have an email in to her breeder to ask how long her bitches cycles are and when she would recommend.

    She will be done laparoscopically.

    She was born June 14.

When would you advise spaying? Should I wait til her next heat cycle then spay right after? The hard thing is that the surgically vet has a 2 month waiting list.

She could come in anytime now although 6 to 10 mo is more common. Unless there is a pressing reason to spay her, I would wait and spay her 3 mos after her next season. Make the appointment while she is in season so that you do not forget. Watch her well at all times while she is in heat. Do not leave her out alone even with a fence or a dog run. No time alone in the yard or off lead in public even for a single moment!

At this point, if she is going to be on a 6 month schedule, I would wait and schedule here after the second heat. With a 2 month waiting list, by scheduling 3 months after her heat, you would be right in the middle of her cycle. Her body will not be blood rich coming into heat or coming out.

Mardi came into heat just a week or so after she joined us. I talked to her breeder and she suggested to wait 3 months after heat.

Don't worry, this is not our first heat. We've got hawk eyes and are experts at house arrest... and have been checking her daily. ;-)

No pressing reason to spay, just want to get it done this winter. We originally had scheduled in for June, but I had a very light schedule this summer so we cancelled so I could spend much more time with her doing fun things, and with spay recovery it would have been hard to do fun things.

I like the idea of calling to make the appointment for 3 months after the day she goes into heat for Round 2. Sounds like a plan!

Love your signature pic!!! I seem to only have boy humans and dogs LOL.....not much help about the heat spay stuff. I hope to some day have a black female whom we've already named Ivy Mae, then I'll be asking this same question.

I've always waited 3 months after the most recent heat.

Thanks all. My breeder recommended 2 months after her next heat so I'll call and schedule the day she goes into heat. Any day now...
