What are you using for fleas and ticks?

In 20 years of living here, I've only pulled maybe 4 ticks of the dogs, and have only had one flea episode, which was when we brought two kittens into the house. I don't have the dogs on any flea/tick preventative as I don't like to use chemicals on them if I don't absolutely have to. The kennel where I'm boarding them next month for our UK trip recommends having them on a preventative, which makes sense. Lot's of dogs, country setting etc...

What are you using and does anyone have any experience with the natural stuff like Sentry Natural Defense Natural Flea and Tick Spray???

I may be wrong, but I feel like I read the Sentry ingredients and was kind of leary about it. I feed raw and like to be as natural as possible, but IMO the natural stuff doesn't work in high risk areas. Last year I applied Frontline Plus once in the summer, when I saw a flea on Cabo. This year I applied it three times, ticks are so bad this year and we like to hike in the woods. After pulling more off the dogs than I can count, finding them in my bed and crawling on my walls, I put Frontline on them and kept up with it over the summer. It is the topical I feel safest using, and it works for us. They got it applied three times the year, I am going to try not to use it anymore the rest of the year and see how it goes.

I use an organic, natural herb spray I saw at my favorite pet store that we spray on Luna during the summer since she swims so much and it only needs to set an hour before she can swim. I use Frontline Plus in spring and fall. It's so cold here in the winter that we don't treat with anything in those months. She has yet to have a flea or tick, and my parent's house (where she goes every weekend in summer) is deep in the Adirondacks. Their other house is in the Hudson Valley of New York (capital of Lyme disease). So the combination works well for us.

Seresto collars have worked great for us.

I use K9 Advantix II on Sam. I switched from Frontline Plus when he was a puppy after I found ticks on him. Since switching, I've never seen a flea or tick.

Advantage Multi during mosquito season (helps with fleas as well)

I use a home-made repellent for ticks in spring (that's when they are most active here) and when we go hiking in rural forests.

I am really disappointed with the Seresto collar (and all collars for that matter). Tossed it after 4 months because I kept pulling ticks out.

Hey, just drop them off at my house! I don't have a flea/tick policy

I use frontline right now, but am seriously considering Alzoo. Maybe check that out and see what you think?

I wonder, if you didn't want to do it, how would they know?

Or if you sprayed some flea flicker tick kicker on them, thats a preventative, it's all natural. I have used it hiking and it has served me well. I have even used it on myself.

We used dried natural garlic granules for both flea and tick control. But luckily in the Pacific Northwest we haven't had a big flea or tick problem or many mosquitoes at all. I don't think I would use this method in areas with lots of ticks and mosquitoes!

We use spot-on stuff. But, just so you know, there are many ticks that feed from your dog that you never see. It sounds creepy but is true. It is very important no matter where you live that your dog has some type of preventative. Lyme disease could be in any tick and it is very scary to wake up and find your dog in pain and not eating. It hits them fast.
