Male or female. For a male I would get a 48" and for a female, 42". You can go smaller if you don't have the room, but I opt for bigger crates if they are going to be stationary in the home.
I am planning on getting a wire crate with a divider for my new pup. It's been years since I've had to crate a dog, and I cannot remember what size I bought for my previous Labs. What size did you get?
Thanks!

48" it is.
Thanks so much!
We have a 42" crate, which is what was recommended by our first breeder for males. She said a 36" for females would be fine. I think a 36" crate seems a little tight. I got one when we got our puppy girl and when it got stolen from a vacation place, I went up to a 42". Forty-two seems the right size for my 2. Many folks on here have 48" crates if they have the room. So, 42" - 48" is probably what you should consider.
Ah, I see Jen beat me to an answer.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

We have a 42", and it's huge for Luna. Our breeder said a 36" would be fine, but her lines run the small end of breed standard.

I use a 36" in the car and for shows and a 42" in the house if she needs to be crated for a while.

Scout is a BIG boy, i got him a 48" for the house, boy was that a pain to haul from bedroom to kitchen every day and night! its large, but if they're going to spend any length of time in it, he can turn around and lay down without being cramped. That said, it came with a divider, which you'll definitely want for a brand new puppy!
He also has a 36" plastic crate for the plane, and a 36" fabric collapsable one for dog shows - I would have gotten him a 42" fabric one but it wouldn't fit in my previous car!

We use the 48" also. Better big than small.

We have a 42" crate. Lola is small (barely 57 lbs) but tall, so her head was bumping up against the top of the 36" crate we had. When she's laying down, the 42" looks massive.
We still use the 36" for road trips, since the 42" doesn't easily fit in our vehicle without putting the seats down. We also have a 36" soft crate for our living/dining area. When we walk over to the table to eat dinner, Lola walks right into her soft crate. :-)
