    Saved My Dogs Live

So, I get ready to go to work today. Just like ever weekday. I give Rex a Dentastix stick and a frozen kong. These are the large dental sticks about 6" long.
All of a sudden I see Rex gaging and foaming at the mouth. He had biten down on the stick and got it stuck between his back upper molers. He was trying to get it out with his tongue but could not get it. I jumped off my motorcycle and reached into his mouth and removed the stuck treat!
I don't think he would have died but I am glad I was there for him.
Starting tomorrow that dental treat is getting cut into smaller pieces.

Glad that you are both okay. He may try to swallow the smaller hard pieces whole, so maybe just skip it for a few days and give it when you are there. You could try a large biscuit as a workday substitute maybe. It is amazing the freak accidents that can happen!

Scary for sure. I'd stick with the kong and avoid the dentastix. I don't think they are that great for a dog to digest, and if you have to cut it in small pieces, he will likely swallow pretty quickly and not get the dental benefits.

Glad you twigged so quickly. When that happened to Jet it was, literally, a twig. I didn't find out what it was till I got it out. I can just imagine how Rex looked, like he was going to die. Jet was heaving up foam and bile in her efforts. It's very scary.

After our experience finding a quarter of a 10" bone gone in 15 minutes I never leave anything they might break a piece off of with them unsupervised. I'd be afraid of him swallowing the smaller pieces too.

Umm, Rex is left outside while you ride off to work on your motorcycle?

Ugh, stupid Dentastix treats. How on Earth are these supposed to clean the teeth and reduce tartar, when they get stuck?!

I don't like them (I don't like Pedigree in general), but I do give them from time to time. Now that Cookie was sick, it was the only thing he would eat. Go figure.

Not a fan of dentastix either, would not feed them to my dogs if they were free. Thank goodness you were there and able to help, that was a great save!

    Scary! Good save.

Have not used them. Was afraid of a big piece being swallowed.
