Could be many things. When she wakes you up, it is because she has to potty?
Hi everyone! Our lab puppy Nala is almost 22 weeks old. She was in the habit of sleeping until 7:00am in her crate until recently... Once she was pretty much house trained, we moved her to our bed at night. She continued her sleeping in until 7:00 am but recently started waking up at sporadic hours! Yesterday, she woke up 2 times before 7:00am UGH. Last night, we decided to put her back in her crate because we thought that we might be moving too much early in the morning disrupting her sleep pattern and she woke up at 3:50am barking. I cut her water off 2-3 hours before bed. Could it be because she is teething? Hungry? We feed her 2 cups in the am, and 2 cups at dinner with snacks throughout the day and evening. We also take her on 2 walks a day but perhaps she isn’t getting enough exercise. PS - She is in her crate while I am at work for 4 hours at a time, so the crate isn't new to her. Any help would be much appreciated!

Well we take her outside to pee every time she wakes up, so it could be? She was sleeping through the night at 8-10 weeks, so it baffles me that her schedule is changing as she is getting older?
Well - my 5 months old puppy, Barley, gets me up once a night to go potty still. There have been a few sporadic nights of uninterrupted sleep - but they are few and far between. Maybe put her back into her crate until she is older?

I would definitely keep her in her crate at night. If she's barking in the middle of the night and it's an unusual event, it's probably because she has to potty. Maybe diarrhea, drank more water than usual, lots of things. Luna had diarrhea at least once a week as a puppy.
Luna is almost a year and a half and she sleeps in her crate at night. She's quiet as a mouse until it's time to get up but starts chewing on her antler in there around 5 am. If she barks or whines or makes any noise, it's ALWAYS because she has to potty.
If you take Nala out and she doesn't have to potty outside, put her right back in her crate. No cookies, attention, nothing.

Bacon was sleeping though the night (no potty breaks) at about 5 months. Bacon has always slept in his kennel at night, but he does sleep on his dog bed for camping trips. Your pup might just be restless. Also, how late at night is your pup drinking? For a while we took up his water bowl around 8 PM. Now, at over a year, he can drink before bed and we have no issue. If you pup is waking up, it also may be that he is not tired. There are nights where we hear Bacon getting up and moving in his kennel more, and that tends to be on days where he is in his kennel more during the day. I might try upping your pups off leash play time. An exhausted pup will sleep a lot sounder than a restless pup.

crate, ignore the barking. white knuckle it if needed. at that age if you ensure the pee at a reasonable time before bed, they should not need to pee in the middle of the night. They may just be testing you.
they may need a snack before bed, i think some members have said that helped.
ETA: how much exercise is the pupy getting and at what time? Are those two walks on leash adn is that it? a puppy at that age needs lots of free play, running around. walks won't cut it.
also for some dogs I find it helps to do a short spurt of exercise an hour or so before bed. Nothing too major, an extra walk, or a few fetches in the yard.

Thanks everyone. We cut her water off about 2 hours before we put her to bed... but maybe we will start doing it a little sooner. We take her on 2 walks a day and she also plays outside. Our backyard has been extremely muddy, so he hasn't been playing as much. We play hide and seek with her around the house which she loves. Maybe we will start taking her for a run/walk before bed to burn some energy.
no on leash running until joints are fully developped. their joints are not doing gorwing and the repetitive impact (when they are growing) can cause some major long term issues. Yes the dog can run circles around you so it's nto "forced" in that sense. you want to opt for off leash play on softer surfaces.
he needs more off leash play time. fetching chasing whatever. play dates are great. this will become more and more of an issue in the next few months as he hits 6-12 months. labs are very active and leash walks do not tire them out.

Thank you Tanya! I did not know that about the running. When are the joints considered fully developed?
