Checking for Ticks and Natural Tick Repellents

This may seem like a silly questions but I want to make sure I am doing this right. I have very little experience with Ticks but for some reason they seem to be all over the area these days.

When doing a tick check on a dog, do you have tips on how to do it right? PLaces to look? At the moment I am looking around the neck/head, the feet (should I look under the feet too?) and under the legs (front and back). I just read on the other thread I should be looking at the butt too

Can you FEEL them too? I do a lot of feeling thru the fur. Would using a comb be better?

Now, I have only ever found ONE tick on Rocky (last year). So I am not really interesting in starting him on the topical meds (as they are not 100% anyway). So for now I plan to do daily checks and use a natural repellent, and testing ticks I do find. If I end up finding too many I shall rethink this plan but for now that's my plan.

Any recommendations on natural Tick Repellents?

All Natural Pets Herbal Defense Spray

Love this stuff, (I use the shampoo, too) I spray it on lightly as we head out the door to go for a walk on the trails.

Our property is tick central, unfortunately. We don't live there, but right now when we take the dogs to hike, we all bring home a crap ton of ticks. I hose them or prior to applying Front line, would bathe them right away with a DE shampoo bar. To help knock off any crawling ticks, and the DE helped kill them. And I'd use a flea comb to look. Armpits, ears, butts. And around the head and neck, a lot of times they like to climb to a high point. Legs. Really anywhere, lol. And when they do attach, you will feel a lump. Hate that feeling of petting and feeling the lump. So when we have been hiking, for about a week I constantly feel for lumps. I am good at finding ticks, but also miss quite a few. For natural thinks, I've tried a spray by Ark Naturals with geranium/peppermint/clove. Tried feeding Bug Off Garlic. Doesn't work where we go. This is an exceptionally bad tick year, so I Front lined everyone last week. I've heard feeding ACV or spraying them with distilled white vinegar can help. Now that I put Front line on everyone, don't want to shampoo since the Front line needs the oils in their coat to work

I feel through the fur. It's easy to notice a bump. It's harder before they're latched on and engorged.

I used primarily Frontline Plus, but I have heard pure oregano oil is really effective.

I use something called LymeBlaster (topical) after I remove a tick but now that we have chickens, we don't have many ticks. If the population was really bad, I might start using Frontline Plus again.

Found this product when we got into bunnies. Have found that this does keep the ticks down, and the ones we found were dying right away, even the babies.

Just thought I'd put this out there. Good for dogs as well. I have dusted Jake with it (just watch eyes, ears, and nose) and worked perfectly. My husband has done the front and back yard with it.

Diatomaceous earth is awesome! I've never put it on a pet before, but i've used it around the house for bug problems

Bacon gets a comb with a flea and tick comb and a hand rub down after being outside. We also have a natural tick repellent wipe we got from Petsmart.
