    Post Pork Femur Bone Disaster

I gave Oliver a pork femur bone, natural flavor, last night. He LOVED it! He ate the two ends off in about an hour and worked on the middle. I thought maybe he had - had enough for the night and took it away to give him the rest another day. Well....he ended up a big vomitty mess. Apparently, he loved the bone but his stomach did not agree.

Anyone else have issues like this?

He had too much at one time. Luna was the same way when she was little. The marrow is very rich for dogs. We had to limit her at first... 10 minutes, 20 minutes, half an hour, then that's it.

I always freeze them first to get rid of any bacteria and it makes less mess.

Good idea about freezing it to eliminate the mess. I didn't realize I would need to limit his time with the bone. Good to know.

I give Gauge raw marrow bones from the store. I have to watch the bigger ones because when he has to much he gets diah.

Natural flavour? Does that mean it wasn't raw?

Too much for his first time. Also avoid smoked bones from the pet store. You are better giving a raw marrow bone from the grocery store.

No clue...it came from Pet Smart and had stuff all over it (?). I was just looking at a ham bone from Amazon and saw one at Pet Smart and decided to try it. The label just said Pork Femur Bone - Natural Flavor.

Here it is off their website: Dentley's™ Nature's Chew Femur Bone Dog Treat | Bones & Rawhide | PetSmart

Who knows what they put in that stuff. Why not buy some marrow bones as Jen said instead? I can bet these are healthier and cheaper

Definitely buy raw marrow bones from the store. They're $1.79/lb here. I take them out of the package, clean off the extra fat, stick it in a freezer bag, freeze for 24 hours, and then I'll give it.

If you're going to give them recreationally, I would definitely freeze first, then teach them to only eat the bones on a mat or towel. GREATLY reduces mess, keeping everybody happy! And always supervise... if Luna's left alone with a bone for too long, she'll chip off pieces.

I'd avoid any type of smoked bone, and any bone at all from Pet smart. Mine are on raw and can handle a lot of things, but a bone like that would probably mess them up too.
