    Hay bales on ice?

We drove by a city park with a fairly large pond the other day. It's frozen. There are hay bales all over the ice. It's not a rink or anything. Any ideas why the city would do this?

Possibly to keep the pond frozen or to designate the ice is a certain depth where the hay bales are located.

I'm curious too. You have to phone the town to ask why, we all want to know. If I assume correctly it's to keep skaters off of ice that isn't safe yet then I have to wonder how safe it was to put them out there in the first place. We've had the usual number of idiot snowmobilers and ice fishers go through the ice and drown already this winter. A few survived.

Hay is put in ponds to help with algae. Perhaps the town takes advantage of being able to position bales fairly evenly so that they'll be where they want them when the ice melts.

When we were kids we use to drag a few bales down to the river to sit on when we were changing from boots to skates. Think at times they were also used to delineate hockey goals and the sides.

It's an illicit college age hockey game. We drove by tonight while they were rearranging the hay bales and getting started in the dark. They were acting like they were going to get caught at any moment. It must happen a lot.

LOL, the joy of being grown up but to act like a kid with fingers being caught in the cookie jar! From what I can remember about hoisting bales of hay around, I seem to remember a trail of blades of hay where ever you moved the bale, that could be a little tricky on ice. It could be entertaining to watch these over grown kids go a round or two

That's exactly what I was thinking! Plus, they're doing this in the dark. There's next to no lighting in this area.
