Breed With a Coat Like a Lab?

What's another breed with a coat like a Lab? I was trying to describe to someone how Oban looked when he was sick and lost all his guard hairs and that now that his double coat is back he looks like a real Lab again. The term double coated meant nothing to this person and when I tried to say what other breed the coat was like I came up blank. Chesapeake? But they are not common so that probably would not help.

First dog that came to my mind was a Siberian husky.

Pretty much any of the outdoor type working breeds will have a similar coat, length being the only difference.

Yes, GSD or Sib but their outer coats are much longer. Is there not one that can look sleek and shiny like a Lab but still be double coated?

German Sheperds and Huskies coats are nothing like a Lab...hair is much longer and fluffier. Chesapeake Bay Retriever is also different.

I guess a chessie would be the closest, but a labrador coat truly is a distinctive feature of the breed. Sleek and shiny isn't correct, but you can see that in a gsp, doberman, greyhound, whippet, etc...

Whenever I pet the GSP's or Dobermans that we train with, I always think their coats feel so thin and weird without the Labby undercoat, LOL.

IMO the Lab coat is very distinct. The closest to it that I have ever experienced is the Anatolian (not likely a breed your friend will have seen). Some Anatolians have longer guard hairs than others, so feel more plush, but their standard allows for both short and rough coats. The "hand" of their double coats feels similar to me. I was told recently that Anatolians shed even more than Labradors -- yikes! Beautiful dogs though.

In case anybody is curious I did google. I found a list that ignored all the sporting group dogs. And an AKC glossary list that says most breeds have two coats. Now I don't feel so dumb about blanking out, I guess the Labrador Retriever is the only one with a coat just like the one they have.
