Our very active silver Lab tore her ACL

Hello all. Our lab, Mica, tore her ACL 3 weeks ago. She had an immediate PRP (platelet rich plasma) treatment to help promote healing, but this will not suffice as a permanent solution. Researching the various surgeries and stem cell treatments has only served to create some confusion as to the correct approach for our very active lab. We're leaning toward the TPLO surgery at this point, but it seems pretty radical given the plates, screws and bone cutting involved. Mica is less than 3 years old... whatever we do, we're hoping she'll still be able to continue to walk and hike as she loves these activities. Has anyone had any experience in repairing a torn ACL? Thanks.

welcome, sorry to hear about your pup's health issues.

If you search "torn ACL" or "TPLO" in the search function you will find lots of information. many members have come asking about options and then posted updates thru surgery adn rehab.

Have you talked to a orthepedic surgeon? (VS a regular vet?)

Our oldest dog had 2 TPLO's when he was 4. He earned his obedience titles after that and never had a problem with his legs related to his TPLOs. He passed recently at the age of 13 1/2.

There are some that believe there is a hereditary component to blowing out cruciates. You may want to let your breeder know.

I guess that it could be hereditary. I spoke with the breeder and she indicated that she wasn't aware of any others. I suspect that its likely more related to our Mica's love for running, ball chasing and chasing those darn turkeys out of her yard.

Hello and welcome. No experience here, just wanted to wish you good luck, so Mica can enjoy a lot more years of happy life - running, playing, and fooling around with balls and toys.

Hope Mica does Ok. My lab Brutus tore his ACL at age 2 and had TPLO surgery, We took it slow after surgery, did PT, and I hike with him all the time now. Important to get an experienced surgeon. Labs are one of those breeds that are prone to this injury because of their size and activity level. Some people think there can be a link to early neuter or spaying also.
