The first dog I ever trained was probably in 1999ish. As a family, we decided on a trainer in the area that was well renowned for working with dogs of all ages and sizes. She shows/breeds numerous terrier breeds and has written training books. The instrument of choice was a prong collar and intimidation. She was PTS a few years later for severe aggression issues that could not be corrected. This trainer did not make her aggressive for clarification. This dog was enrolled in class due to fear aggression. What this type of training did to her did not help her at all and she continued to get worse.
Around 6 years later my fiance (now husband) got 2 dogs and I did all of their training on a flat collar and long lead. It was mostly positive reinforcement. We did do the nose rub in their poo and pee thing and on the female we did dominance rolls. Oh the things we learn after the fact! Back then it was about being the "pack leader" and not letting dogs look you in the eye or challenge you...etc. We had/have a good relationship with the dogs but not as tight of a bond as I do with Maverick.
This time around it is all positive reinforcement and NILIF. I am closer to Maverick than I have ever been to any other dog I've owned. Training is fun and I love working with him and teaching him new things. This time has been rewarding for both of us instead of frustrating as in the past. I much prefer this way of training and I think we have a closer bond because of it. He trusts me and isn't afraid of consequences but instead loves his rewards and the together time and that's how it should be.
