Proud mommy here!!!! He was so good a little over whelmed at first but he quickly settled in. He worked nicely around the other dogs. We did walking on loose leash and healing. I liked that she explained these being two diff things.
I was always taught that when walking the dog always had to walk next to you. When pleasure walking she said they have till the end of the leash. If they are pulling turn go the other direction just never stop walking. If your in a public place encounter other dogs on walks that's where the heal comes into play.
He did well with the healing exercise as well he got a little distracted with the crazy bulldog next to him trying to play. All in all a very good class!!!!
Congrats on a great first class and enjoy the rest with that cutie!!!

Glad it went well!
And her description of walking vs. heeling is exactly what I always do with my dogs. They have until the end of the leash in either direction but are not allowed to pull on it. For crowded situations I don't necessarily ask for a true "heel" as that has very specific meaning for my competition dogs, but I shorten the leash dramatically and tell them "with me" which is a more casual heel - by my side but not necessarily as focused on my as in the ring.
I have never understood requiring a dog to heel on what was meant to be a pleasure walk ... most of the fun is stopping and sniffing, etc. They need that time to just be a dog and relax - as long as they can do that without pulling on the leash or blowing me off entirely, then that is THEIR time.

I was taught the same as Annette. Heeling is for obedience class and close passing and places I need to be more alert. Loose leash without pulling is what we do on the way over to the bush where he will be let off the leash. I don't allow any sniffing or peeing or pooping on the walk to the bush but he learned he can do that in the bush so doesn't even try any more. Well, not until we are almost there and I have to do a few makeup sessions on changing direction to combat the pulling every now and then.
Benelli sounds like he's understanding already. Moving it outside might be a bit of a set back but he will figure it out, I bet.
So glad it went well. Those crazy bulldogs
