One year ago today we nervously picked up our first puppy. Both of us are in our late 30s and grew up with dogs, but never raised one as adults. With jobs and a schedule that kept us away from home from 6 am - 6 pm almost every day, a dog was something we always wanted but knew wouldn't be fair to the pup with such a lifestyle. About two years ago our jobs both shifted in such a way that we both found ourselves working from home 90% of the time - and when one of us was in the office the other was always home. And thus began the search for a puppy. The breed was never in question - both of us love labs, have known many, and knew that a lab was the right dog for us.
After a long process of the breeder/rescue discussion, followed by trying to find the *right* breeder, we finally got on a waiting list. A while later I got the call - we were first on the list for a male in the litter and it was a small one, with one boy and three girls. Therefore we knew from the day he was born which pup would be ours. We watched him grow through pictures, and even got the chance to visit and play with him (and his super affectionate momma) before the day we brought him home.
I spent a lot of time on this board during the 8 weeks between getting that call and pickup day, learning as much as possible. But I was still nervous when I held that wiggly pup for the first time!
But then we got home, he ran around the backyard and plopped down with this big smile, and I knew everything would be great. I fell in love with that smile and he still gives it to me daily.
Today we celebrated with a hike, a new toy, and a new comfy bed (okay that was just a coincidence since I'm remodeling my home office).
Happy Gotcha Day, Thor! It's been the best year ever.
