    Training "Watch Me" Backfired LOL

LOL, who'd a thunk? You know the Watch Me exercises where you hold a treat in your hand and move your hand left, right, up, down and your dog only gets the treat when he looks right into your eyes instead of at the treat? Guess what we're using to lure Oban in his rehab exercises where he stands with back legs up on a platform and has to stretch left, right, up and down? Of course, a treat. He's better with the Vet Tech but with me, me who has played that game with him before, with me he just stands and looks at me. Like, "What's wrong with you Mum? I'm looking right at you. GIVE ME THE TREAT!"

Ah, Oban, you're being such a good boy. Vet tech may have to take over this one.

That is too funny! LOL! You are going to have to come up with a whole new game for rehab.

    Oh no!

What about touch? Or look? I use look for 'mark' for birds and go-outs and watch for watch me. I had to train the difference. Worked well with a clicker.

LOL. We’ve never trained “watch me” like that though. We transition the food from our hands to our mouths to teach the watch and then spit cookies as a reward. That way if we put food back in our hands we can still use it as a lure as they haven’t learned to avoid looking at it, just that it is usually no longer in our hands. If we have it in our hands and they won’t look at our faces (once they have learned) we just give a verbal correction, point to our faces and remind them “watch”.

I tried spitting. I have amazingly bad aim when I spit. The neighbours likely already think I'm nuts, maybe I should go outside and practise it some.

I think it’s a skill worth learning if you are going to compete in Obedience or even in Rally. It really is the best way to teach that attention where they are staring avidly at your face at al times, LOL.
