    Hunting vs Show breeder

Its been a little over a year since we lost Bliss. I am just starting to look for another dog. I know all about what to look for with a more show/conformation breeder. However, are health clearances or titles any different when looking at a more hunting/field type breeder?

    Thank for any assistance.

Are you wanting to hunt with your new pup? If so, I would recommend when looking for breeders, look at hunt/field tests of the parents, the talents of the parents, etc. When we found our breeder we also talked with them about how both Bacon's parents hunt. Health tests are the same.

I wish you the best of luck in finding your next little one

No, I'm not looking to hunt. I am just thinking a more hunting line bred dog will be more suited to what I want to do. I'm looking for info on any specific titles that hunting dogs should have that "show their worth". Sort of like a good conformation dog will be a CH. Also, any different (if any) health tests I should look for other then heart, hips, and eyes.

As mentioned, same health tests. Also EIC clear (but show lines do those also).

    A list of hunting titles:

    Before the dog's name:

    FC Field Champion (Field Trial)
AFC Amateur Field Champion (Field Trial)
    NFC National Field Trial Champion
NAFC National Amateur Trial Field Champion

    After the dog's name:
JH Junior Hunter (Hunting Retriever Tests)
SH Senior Hunter (Hunting Retriever Tests)
MH Master Hunter (Hunting Retriever Tests)

WC Working Certificate (used mostly by conformation breeders as proof the dog has some natural ability)

Oh, thanks! This is perfect! Do people typically not buy a puppy from a field line breeder that doesn't have titles?

I'd want the titles, at least the Hunting Retriever tests, as proof of their worth, just as conformation breeders do with the CH title.

Most reputable field breeders will breed dogs that can turn it off and on. You don't want one that can't settle. If you're buying pups from a "field line breeder" you are essentially buying from a backyard breeder then. All you have is their word that the dog can hunt. And their "hunting" might not be what you want.

I think you might find more hunt/trial kennels testing for CNM and EIC. Just guessing based on some looking I did a couple of years ago.

Yes, I was going to mention this. Many show breeders are starting to test for EIC, but I think CNM testing is at this point still primarily done by field breeders and might be something to look for.

Beside the usual clearances as mentioned above, OFA, etc., you can look at web sites to see what breeders are doing with their dogs. Of course, do your research on any breeder. Some will show confirmation, some field trials, and of course, the all around lab does both. Melody's breeder has a boy who is a grand champion and a master hunter.
