Our mailbox has been buried in a snow bank for over a month now. We had our mail forwarded to our business mailbox but something in the forwarding system at the post office broke and we lost a great deal of our mail. The snow bank compacted down to about six feet high and the post office requires a ten foot clearance in front of the mailbox in order to deliver.
It was in the 40's today so I went out to see what the status was. It was bad. All of the snow on the street side had melted then froze again. I chipped at it for a bit but there was no way I could get everything cleared in a reasonable amount of time. Then it occurred to me. The mailbox is in a planter. Why am I moving the snow and ice? Why not just move the mailbox?
So I tunneled through from the sidewalk, chipped out the planter, dumped ten gallons of hot water on the ground and pried the dang thing up with a shovel. Then I physically dragged the entire setup, frozen dirt and all out of the snow bank. I would say at this point it weighs about 100 lbs. Then I rolled it into our driveway, walked over to the snow bank and said, "Ha ha! I win!"
What a chore! You might be sore in the morning but at least you'll get your mail. Be sure to notify the post office of the change.

Persistence is key!
When i was a kid, ages ago, a neighbor had his mailbox suspended from a pole that hung from two posts. So as the road narrowed in the winter he slid the pole farther out towards the road. Neat setup. Been thinking I might try the same.

I've seen some pretty creative mailbox set-ups. New England has the most unique ones that hang on chains from very tall poles. That way they swing when the plow comes through...but maybe they can move them out along the pole, too. As annoying as it is to have a box knocked off by the plow driver, it's amazing to follow one and see it happen. Those mailboxes fly about 30 feet in the air!

I'm actually thinking that I need to put my mailbox on wheels that lock. Then when it snows, I can pull it back, then put it up, then pull it back . . .
We have a particularly bad issue in that our driveway is right next to our neighbor's so the plows sweep in and make the edges a dumping ground. Our neighbor has another house where he spends most of his time and he doesn't have a mailbox at this house. So I'm thinking that we can just relocate it wherever. It has to be better than what we have going on now.
