The Kennel Club Petition to Ban Shock Collars

Most of you know my connection to the UK, and I follow The Kennel Club on Facebook. Saw this today.

Petition: Ban electric shock dog collars in the UK

    Electric Shock Collars

I don't use E-collars, but I am not against them when used by professionals who know what they are doing. I do feel there is a lot of room for abuse when using them though.

One of Bruce's litter mates went to a young lady in Switzerland. I got to meet her at my friends a couple weeks ago, we all went to Cruft's together. She was telling us all the rules and regulations she had to deal with in Switzerland regarding dogs and breeding. Let's just say things are very, very liberal here in the US as compared to Europe.

I thought they banned them already, along with prong collars.

I think they are banned in Wales but not all of the U.K.

Just Wales in the UK, but many other EU countries have banned them.

They are hypocrites. I can assure you that there is not a single police dog in Europe, the UK, or anywhere else that was trained with cookies. They use these tools. It honks me off when elites (holier than thou political agitators, and government-always-knows-best groups) want the little people to follow rules to which they are exempt.

And by the way, don't call them "shock" collars. That is a pejorative that the ban-the-collar crowd uses to malign what is one of the best and most refined training tools ever invented. Of COURSE they can be abused. So can a stick and a leash and a booted foot, for crying out loud.

Before the e-collar was invented, you don't want to know what was used to teach/force high-rollers to stop on a whistle 250 yards away. The e-collar is NOT a tool for teaching the dog anything. It's only a means of reinforcing something the dog has already been taught.

Oh, I'm sorry. This topic pushes all my buttons. I'll go away now.

TuMicks, I can't disagree with anything you said here. I think this a case of non-dog people telling dog people how to do things.

100%. TuMicks. Agree with every single thing you've written. E-collars are a tool. And YES they can be abused just like every other tool that was invented.

Training has come a long way since sticks, and throwing dogs against walls...

Agree 1000%!! We only use our e-collar as a training tool, with the aid of a professional.

Am I correct in thinking hidden fences would fall into this ban? I've seen many rescue groups and vets say they dramatically reduce the risk of injury as the pets have much less chance getting hit by a car.

Anything used incorrectly can be dangerous.

That is an interesting question for the folks in the UK. Hidden fences are useful in our designed neighborhoods with HOA regulations that forbid regular fences for aesthetic reasons.
